Britain’s least used railway station saw just 40 passengers in one year with only two services running six days a week.

Located between two villages in Nottinghamshire, Elton and Orston station sees one train stopping per day in each direction, except Sundays.

The first service leaves at 7.04am towards Nottingham with the second departing for Skegness at 5.11pm.

Elton and Orston recorded 40 entries and exits from passengers in the financial year up to March 2022, according to the latest figures from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR).

This compares to London Waterloo which recorded the highest number over the same period – 41,426,042.

Stations in the capital rank in the top five of the ORR figures, with London Victoria, London Bridge, London Liverpool Street and Stratford ranging from 28,000,000 to almost 37,000,000.

Glasgow Central is Scotland’s most used station with 15.3 million passengers with Cardiff Central retaining its position as the busiest in Wales, with 7.5 million passenger entries and exits, according to the ORR.

There were six stations with fewer than 100 entries and exits in the latest year, with Elton and Orston in top spot.

It is followed by Teesside Airport (42); Stanlow and Thornton (44); Denton, Greater Manchester, (50); Kirton Lindsey (68) and Sugar Loaf in Powys (76).

Feras Alshaker, Director of Planning and Performance at the ORR said: “It is heartening to see passengers return to travelling by rail following what was a difficult period for the industry during the pandemic.

“There’s still some way to go in order for station usage figures to return to pre-pandemic levels.

“Once again it is important to thank all those in the rail industry, who continue to work hard to help people travel safely and with confidence.”

Figures for 2022-23 are due to be released in November.
