A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a four-year-old boy.

Police were called to an address in Montague Road in Hackney, northeast London, yesterday (Wednesday, December 20) to concerns for the welfare of a child. Cops and officials from the London Ambulance Service rushed to the scene where they found the child had been stabbed.

He was taken to hospital but while doctors worked to try to save his life, he sadly succumbed to his injuries. The victim's next-of-kin has been informed about the tragic death, police confirmed.

Homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are now leading the investigation into the incident.

A 41-year-old woman, who was known to the boy, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. Officers confirmed they are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Met Police in Hackney announced: "A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 4-yr-old boy in #Hackney. A woman – known to the boy – has been arrested and remains in custody. Detectives are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident."

Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway who leads policing for Hackney and Tower Hamlets said: "This is an extremely distressing incident which will understandably cause shock and disbelief amongst the local community and those who attended the scene.

"We are working with our partners, including Hackney Council and the school community, to ensure support is there for people who need it. Specialist officers from our homicide team are progressing this investigation and continue to work to establish the circumstances of this young child’s death, and the events that led up to it.

"This incident occurred within the home and, while is no wider public safety risk, additional officers will be present in the area as we recognise the impact this will have on the community."

    The investigation is ongoing.
