Miss France has been dubbed a woke competition after its “androgynous” winner was selected by judges. Eve Gilles, 20, was the judge’s pick in the competition in Djion, France, on Saturday night and watched by 7.5m as she took the crown.

Some viewers were outraged that Ms Gilles – who sported a pixie haircut – had been selected by the panel and dubbed it a “woke contest” as she only came third in the public vote.

But others quickly leapt to her defence asking if in France they should measure respect of women by the length of their hair.

Ms Gilles said: “We’re used to seeing beautiful Misses with long hair, but I chose an androgynous look with short hair,” reports The Telegraph.

She added on stage: “I would like to show that the competition is evolving and society too, that the representation of women is diverse, in my opinion beauty is not limited to a haircut or shapes that we have… or not.”

The winner is crowned by a combination of public vote and a panel of seven female judges.

Ms Gilles came third in the public vote but was the judge’s top choice – which sparked the storm on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

One said: “Making people believe that the most beautiful woman in France looks like a man is woke!”

“It’s not that she’s not pretty, it’s just that she comes in and ticks all the boxes of the woke delirium that is rampant in France… and she ends up Miss France… she doesn’t exude any femininity, whereas Miss France is supposed to be the representation of French femininity,” said another.

Another added that Miss France is no longer a beauty contest “but a woke contest which is based on inclusiveness.”

However others were quick to point out her hair length shouldn’t mean the competition was called woke.

Another X user said: “Maybe the new #MissFrance isn’t gorgeous in your eyes, but seeing wokeism in her because she has short hair…. It’s just ridiculous.”

Left wing MPs also waded into the debate.

Sandrine Rousseau, a Green MP, said: “So, in France, in 2023, we measure the progress of respect for women by the length of their hair?

Fabien Roussel, national secretary of the communist party, said: “Support for Eve Gilles, elected Miss France, who is already suffering the violence of a society which does not accept that women define themselves in all their diversity.”

Miss France has tried to update its image by allowing women of any age – including trans women – enter.
