A diver has detailed the horror shark attack that has haunted him for years after hearing the screams of a man being torn into.

The whitetip shark captured by diver Dan White in Egypt was circling close to his diving group. Remaining calm after spotting the apex predator up close, Dan decided to record the "cool encounter".

But the encounter turned violent soon after, with the shark riled up by tourists entering the water.

German divers entering the water seemed to spook the shark. It soon turned its attention to the new entrants in the water and tore into one.

Dan, speaking of the incident back in 2018, told Tracking Sharks: "As I was filming I noticed that one of the outlet diver's bubbles spooked the shark and it turned to investigate."

He told the BBC's Why Sharks Attack: "It bit into the diver's leg, latched on, thrashed around and ended up going over almost like a cartwheel. It was crazy, it wouldn't let go for what felt like forever. It ended up tearing his calf muscle completely off his leg." Dan's horror footage still haunts him to this day, with the screams of the tourist still ringing in his ears.

Dan added: "There was a big plume of blood in the water. Another diver started screaming, you could hear her scream – a shriek noise in your ear. It's horrifying to listen to."

After the attack, a tourniquet was applied to the victim's leg as first responders administered pain medication. The leg thankfully did not need to be amputated after a trip to the hospital saw him slowly but surely recover.
