A distraught dad who was forced to close his business because of the cost of living crisis said he couldn't afford Christmas presents for his kids.

Ryan Croft, 36, said last year that he was grappling with the cost of living crisis and faced a bleak Christmas after his scaffolding business shut down. After his business closure, he was left penniless, as reported by LeedsLive.

Ryan, who's been sofa surfing, found his children understanding about the change in Christmas plans. When he told them Christmas would be different, they responded: "It doesn't matter, as long as we have each other."

The reaction left Ryan heartbroken. Leeds Live reported in December 2022 that his children were staying with his ex-partner, who was also struggling with the cost of living crisis.

There were no decorations up at home, and Ryan described the situation as "depressing". He said he even knows people who've had to steal for their Christmas dinner.

Ryan lamented: "It's supposed to be a time for celebration and family and this time it's not." He added: "It's going to be the worst Christmas ever. I couldn't afford to buy my kids Christmas presents this year."

He said that he "almost froze to death" sleeping in his van and had to get winter clothing from a charity shop.

He stated: "I've got no money, two days ago I was promised it would be in the bank. I've come to the Jobcentre chase it up because I've not got the money."

He also revealed the home doesn't feel festive, saying: "It just feels totally different, we haven't got a tree up, we couldn't afford to buy a tree. There's no tree up in the house and no decorations. We can't afford the electricity bills to warm the house, it's put a lot of pressure on everybody."
