A father and son from New South Wales, Australia tragically died after a fireball crash.

Lane Kokshorn, 30, and his 10-year-old son reportedly crashed into a set of power lines whilst flying a small Highlander Rotax 914UL plane as they flew over a property in Lilydale near Grafton, Australia.

The pair were sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Grieving family members and friends have taken to Facebook to express their emotions at the loss of the father and son.

One friend said: “I have no words, so-so sorry to the entire Kokshorns clan. Much love at this tragic time,”

Another added: "Sending all of our love at this incredibly difficult time. Holding you in my thoughts – I’m so sorry,”

A third friend said: “My heart breaks for you all, I’m so very sorry for the loss of Lane and his baby boy. Much love to you and your family xx.”

A Facebook post inviting people to attend the funeral was posted alongside a photo of the pair smiling on the plane shortly before taking off.

The post reads: "A celebration of their lives,” "“Two beautiful souls shall soar the sky’s (sic) forever.”

The pair had stayed at the Southport Flying Club before flying the next day with their journey due to start at 9 am.

Emergency services attended the scene with paramedics, police and the State Emergency Service on hand to do all they could to save the father, who did have flying experience and his son, but sadly they were declared dead at the scene.

Acting Inspector Aaron Van Schaik said: “A recreational aircraft clipped a powerline, as a consequence of that then crashed onto the banks of the Clarence River.”

He added: “Unfortunately, the plane caught fire after the impact.”

Steve Rance who is the aerodrome manager at the Southport Flying Club, offered his condolences to the “devoted” father, who used to visit the club “four-to-five times a week”.

He said Lane and his son were “happy as anything” before taking their tragic trip.

He described how the pair were "avid aviators" and Lane's son would "go flying with his dad a lot"

He continued: “I feel heartbroken for his partner. It’s something she will never get over,”

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) have confirmed that they are not investigating the crash.

But, NSW Police are will carry on their investigations with help from Recreational Aviation Australia.
