You may never have heard of the town, but it’s actually a very charming and beautiful part of Western Romania that plays host to heaps of festivals. In fact the city is packed full of culture, hosting over 30 festivals throughout the year, from the Central European Film Festival to Vest Fest. It's easy to see why the city was voted Europe’s capital of culture in 2021.

The next festival to be hosted in Timișoara is the Simultan Festival on September 30 – a festal of video art and music. Plus, beginning on September 27 is the Timișoara Fashion Week!

Meanwhile they city's gorgeous parks, multicoloured baroque buildings and patterned mosaic roofs are all well worth a visit, as well as the student town filled with museums for history buffs. There’s the Timișoara Art Museum, Banat Village Museum – a model village based on 19th Century peasant houses – and the Memorial Museum of the 1989 Revolution which is all about the Ceaușescu dictatorship. So there’s lots to do on top of sipping pints when you’re over there.

Getting there doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg either. Over on Skyscanner we found flights to Timișoara from the UK from as little as £26. While the study showed that the average cost of a hotel stay in the Romanian city was £82 you can actually find much cheaper accommodation if you want to save as much as possible.

As for hotels, we found Moss’s Cave – a one bedroom apartment – from just £21 a night on Booking.com, and it sleeps two people working out at just £10.50pp a night! If you’d prefer a hotel to an apartment then you can opt for the Hotel Le Baron. It costs just £28 for a double room with a balcony which, while basic, gets the job done for cheap

Runners up in the Bounce Cost Index included Buenos Aires in Argentine where a beer costs £1.57 and a public transport ticket costs from just 12p. Baku, in Azerbaijan, was the third best value destination with £7 meals and beer for £1.15. However, it didn’t pip the Romanian city to the top because a night’s stay can cost from £128 a night. Yogyakarta, in Indonesia, also made the best value list with meals costing just £1, beer £2.56 and a hotel room from £53 a night. However, getting a flight there is more expensive as flights start from £1,047.
