The commercial vehicle financing company LeaseVan has called for delivery drivers to be allowed to use bus lanes this festive period to avoid delays.
With 130million parcels containing gifts sent each December, Christmas is the hardest time of the year for most delivery drivers, who have to spend more time on the road.
Tim Alcock from LeaseVan noted that by allowing the drivers to use bus lanes, employees would be able to work quicker, and customers could get their parcels more efficiently.
He explained: “Unsurprisingly, over 130million parcels containing gifts are sent each year, meaning delivery drivers are going to be up to their neck in getting them to doorsteps in time.
“That’s why we wanted to find a solution to help ease the pressure on delivery drivers while making it easier for customers to have their orders more quickly.”

According to The Highway Code, the only privately owned vehicles that can use bus lanes are motorcycles without sidecars, mopeds, scooters, and bicycles.
However, whilst the lanes are used to make sure public transportation services such as buses and taxis are able to run effectively, these lanes are often much quieter than the rest of the roads.
As a result, a growing number of motoring experts have stated that they would be perfect to help make journey times quicker for delivery drivers.

Tim also highlighted that by separating the delivery vans from the rest of the traffic, it would ease congestion for other motorists travelling during the holidays.
He added: “Having bus lanes available will help separate delivery vans from typical ongoing traffic so they can easily drive through busy streets and avoid disappointing customers.
“We believe this should be trialled throughout December and if the scheme turns out to be a success, then it can be an annual tradition.”

However, whilst some are calling for the idea to be rolled out during the month, drivers currently face harsh penalties for entering a bus lane.
For most of the UK, motorists will be fined £70 for driving in the lane, with drivers in Greater London being charged £160.
Some roads also feature temporary bus lanes, which feature signs stating the times in which motorists are able to enter them without risking a fine.
