A Labour peer said he has “never been so embarrassed” after receiving a noisy phone call in Parliament.

Labour peer Lord Woodley apologised after his phone started playing the Mission Impossible theme tune in the House of Lords.

Lord Woodley’s phone loudly blasted out the iconic theme tune as the environment minister Lord Douglas Miller was being introduced after being made a life peer by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

The peer’s ringtone was only able to get through the first few iconic notes of the soundtrack before he switched it off and made an apology.

In a statement in Parliament, Lord Woodley said: “Could I first of all apologise to the Speaker and particularly to our new lord Douglas Miller for my phone going off. I’ve never been so embarrassed in all my life. I’m sincerely sorry.”

Responding to the incident on Sky News one guest on Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge said: “After COP28 if he is the new environment minister then he has got mission impossible.”

Below a clip of the video on X, several people responded to the incident. One person wrote: “Apt and perfect timing if you ask me.”

This isn’t the first time a politician’s phone has gone off during a serious moment. Last year, then Deputy Prime Minister Therese Coffey’s phone sounded during an interview.

Whilst on LBC, Ms Coffey’s phone started blaring out music by Dr Dre, a song choice which surprised many listeners.

At the time Ms Coffey said: “I’ve just realised my alarm is going off on my phone, you’re getting a bit of Dr Dre. It’s just an 8 o’clock alarm, sorry.”

Lord Woodley was originally made a Labour life peer in November 2020. In a statement at the time, he said: “Those who know me will be assured that wherever I am or whatever title I hold I will always put the interests of working people first, as I have done all my life.”
