Ever since Britain voted to leave the EU in 2016, and when Brexit was finally made official in January 2020, there has been a growing unease within the European Union.

Countries have begun to rebel against the bureaucracy of the bloc and more anti-EU politicians have been voted in. The most recent was Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, founder of the Party for Freedom in Holland.

He won 37 seats in parliament, well ahead of his nearest rival – a left-wing alliance. Elsewhere in Europe, Giorgi Meloni – prime minister of Italy – has thrown the cat among the pigeons, as she is fiercely anti-immigration, and has already taken aim at the EU’s human rights laws.

Viktor Orban of Hungary, is the longest serving EU leader and just today caused problems for the bloc as he has put a stopper in the Brussel’s support for Kyiv.

Populist Robert Fico is prime minister in Slovakia, and Alternative for Germany (AfD) is polling above 20 per cent in the country. Perhaps most well-known, Marine Le Pen is pushing to win the next presidency when famed Europhile Emmanuel Macron steps down.

As well as growing dissent within the EU’s ranks, there are fears that proposed changes to the EU treaty could transform the EU into a bloc dominated by Germany, with member states reduced to ‘vassal’ status, according to opponents of the changes.

The proposals, tabled by among others arch-Brexit critic Guy Verhofstadt, would involve a total of 267 changes to the treaties, including strengthening the role of the European Parliament, the establishment of a both Defence Union and an Energy Union, and limitations on the power of veto for members of the EU27.
