The Philippines has accused China of using water cannons to attack a supply ship bringing provisions to a remote military base in the South China Sea on Friday.

Manila claims that Chinese ships made “dangerous manoeuvres” to the vessel before firing water cannons at it in an attempt to force it to change course.

Authorities called the act “an illegal though unsuccessful attempt to force [it] to alter course” from a routine resupply mission to troops stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre in the Second Thomas Shoal.

The country also claimed two other Filipino ships were harassed by inflatable boats owned by the Chinese Coast Guard.

The BRP Sierra Madre is an old US Navy ship that the Philippines purposely grounded in 1999 at the Second Thomas Shoal in order to better enforce its claim to the area.

China claims the area as its own and clashes between the countries in the South China Sea have become increasingly regular.

A spokesperson for China’s Coast Guard said two small transport vessels and three marine police vessels “entered the waters adjacent to Ren’ai Reef [Second Thomas Shoal] in China’s Nansha Islands without the permission of the Chinese government”.

The statement added that China had “indisputable sovereignty over the Nansha Islands and their adjacent waters, including Ren’ai Reef” and urged the Philipines to “immediately stop its infringing actions” on Beijing’s territory.

The clashes come just under three weeks after Manila and Beijing blamed each other for a collision in the same area.
