WWE has confirmed that Hall of Famer Paul 'Triple H' Levesque is recovering in hospital having suffered a recent 'cardiac event'.

In a statement released on their website on Wednesday, WWE gave few details on the health scare, but added Levesque underwent a 'successful procedure' last week.

The procedure was carried out at Connecticut's Yale New Haven Hospital, with the company adding that the 'episode' related to a genetic issue.

The news that one of wrestling's biggest stars had been apparently taken ill left fans stunned on social media, with many instantly posting messages of support following the announcement.

One read: "True GOAT. One of the best to ever lace a pair of boots. Glad to hear he's doing better. Onward and upward, King Of Kings!"

Another said: "That's scary news. I hope he's okay. I pray that he'll overcome this."

WWE's simple address on the matter stated: "Paul Levesque, a.k.a. Triple H, underwent a successful procedure last week at Yale New Haven Hospital following a cardiac event," read the entry on to the company's website.

"The episode was caused by a genetic heart issue and Paul is expected to make a full recovery."

The veteran of the squared circle is one of the most decorated and popular performers in recent memory.

After an unrivalled career as an active wrestler – most of which was with WWE – he moved into an off-screen role and is one of the company's top officials.

He was a 14-time former world champion in Vince McMahon's empire, and has also won the King of the Ring and Royal Rumble among many other accolades.

The Game headlined WrestleMania aplenty and enjoyed storied rivalries with the likes of The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels.

Presently Executive Vice President, Global Talent Strategy & Development in WWE, the 52-year-old is the son-in-law to McMahon, and husband of Stephanie McMahon, the company's Chief Brand Officer.

In recent years, arguably his biggest accomplishment has been the creation and development of NXT, which has proven to be one of WWE's most popular brands.

Another fan added: "Triple H was and always will be the leader of NXT – fingers crossed he's back doing what he does best soon!"
