The biggest drinkers in the world have been revealed – and despite Brits' love for a good pint, we’re not number one.

Brits have long been saddled with the stereotype of being the world's biggest binge drinkers. Nipping to the pub is like a right of passage – but apparently, there are bigger booze lovers out there.

When you think of who in the world likes a good ol’ ale, you might think of stereotypes – Brits, Aussies, Germans? But none of them won the title.

Surprisingly to some, the first place went out to Denmark. The UK was also topped by Romania’s heavy drinkers.

In the UK, more than a third of people – 35% in total – admitted to binge drinking on the regular. Denmark scored a staggering 37% in comparison.

The news comes as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development released their health league data. They assessed 33 countries – finding heavy drinkers made up on average 19% of the population.

However, in some areas, binge drinking made up a much smaller percentage, including Turkey where it only made up 3%

Alcohol awareness campaigns have called the figures ‘concerning’. Dr Richard Piper, chief executive of Alcohol Change UK, told PA News Agency: “Alcohol causes too much harm here in the UK. But this is totally avoidable.

However, in better news, the UK has lower average smoking rates than the other countries surveyed, though one in 20 people admitted to vaping regularly, which is above the average.
