A 27-year-old woman has died and two people are fighting for their lives after a car crashed into a tree on the A194 on Saturday evening.

Police were called to the A195 and A182 shortly after 10.30pm following reports of a collision on the busy slip road.

It is understood a silver Audi S3 was travelling westbound when it left the road and hit a tree.

Paramedics attended the scene where a female passenger – aged 27 – was found dead inside the car.

Three other passengers in the car were injured in the collision and taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, three of which are said to be in a critical condition, Chronicle Live reports.

In a statement, Sergeant Pinner Rana, of Northumbria Police ’s Motor Patrols department said the incident has "seriously injured three" people and "resulted in the death of a woman."

Sergeant Rana said the force is "continuing to support the families" involved as they work to "tirelessly establish what has happened."

The Northumbria Police Department has since urged anybody with any knowledge of the incident to come forward.
