The UK is just a few hours away from being battered by a huge Arctic blast, and drivers are being warned about the costly impact of not clearing their cars properly when it arrives.

Forecasters have issued warnings about the return of the dreaded Beast from the East snowy weather system coming to UK shores from Russia.

While the mercury has been hitting as low as -2C overnight, it is now being claimed by experts that it will plummet to the freezing low temperature of -10C in densely populated areas.

Starting from later today (Wednesday, December 7), and covering most of Scotland, England and Wales, it could even last two weeks as the Arctic blast triggers snow and ice across the country.

But when the snow falls, drivers are being warned about attempting to start their journeys without properly cleaning the mounds of snow off their vehicles – or face a whopping £2,500 fine.

According to the official Highway Code on the Government's website, Rules 228 and 229 states: “Before you set off you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows, you MUST ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible, and make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly.

“Remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users.”

The rules also state that you should not drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential – if it is, take great care and allow more time for your journey.

It adds “Take an emergency kit of de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel, together with a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down.”

Failing to do this will land you with a huge fine, and three points on your licence, too, which could make driving home for Christmas a little bit trickier.
