On the evening of January 6, 2007, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom ventured out for a beautiful romantic restaurant date – but they didn't make it home.

The couple had planned to go out for dinner together and then attend a friend's party but when Newsom had stopped for a quick embrace as he picked his girlfriend up from a car park – they were carjacked.

But that was only a minor part of the horrific events that had faced the couple that night as they were bound and blindfolded by three men, and were forced into the backseat of Christian's SUV at gunpoint.

The vehicle was then driven to a house on Chipman Street, Knoxville, Tennessee, which is believed to have been the home of the man who would be executed for their deaths.

Inside Newsom was repeatedly sodomized with an object and then blindfolded, gagged, arms and feet bound and his head covered.

He was later dragged outside the house, barefoot and taken to nearby railroad tracks to be shot in the back of the head, the neck, and the back, and his body then set on fire.

Channon's death came only after hours of sexual torture leaving her with horrific injuries to her vagina, anus and mouth.

She was not only raped but savaged with "an object," possibly a broken chair leg, a court heard.

She was then beaten around the head before a type of chemical was poured down her throat and body including her bleeding and battered genital area, a forensic expert said.

The assailants then "hog-tied" her with curtains and strips of bedding, and covered her face with a small bin bag before her she was stuffed into five larger bin bags that would suffocate her to death, slowly.

A group of five men were later incarcerated for their killings – but only one man was sent to death row.

Lemaricus Devall Davidson, known to his friends as "slim" was indicted on 16 counts of felony murder growing out of the rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 2 counts of premeditated murder, 2 counts of especially aggravated robbery, 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft.

These 46 charges were the same as his friend, George Geovonni "Detroit" Thomas and Letalvis "Rome" Cobbins, who was given life without parole.

But as Davidson had already had prior convictions, it landed him on Death Row on October 30, 2009.

Eric Boyd and Vanessa Coleman were also jailed for their involvement in what has been labelled as "the most violent car-jacking in US history."
