Darlington: 'Tornado' spotted in County Durham

Northeast England Weather has tweeted a number of pictures and videos of the extreme weather event.
Alongside one post, the account wrote: “Funnel cloud or possible tornado Cloud with tornado.
“Heavy showers bubbling up here in #countydurham.”
Locals began reporting clouds appeared to form a funnel towards the ground from around 12.10pm.
Several people took to social media to post photos and videos of the dramatic twister.
The Great Northern Air Ambulance, the local air ambulance service charity covering Cumbria, the North East & North Yorkshire, tweeted two pictures of the tornado.
The accompanying tweet read: “Might have to put the helicopter away.
“Our colleague Megan has just spotted this over Darlington.”
One person retweeted a post on the social media website of a picture showing the tornado forming.
They wrote: “Check this one out in Darlington! Amazing!”
Another Twitter user posted a video of the extreme weather event.
They wrote: “Nothing to see here, just a tornado in Darlington.
One resident who saw the event, said they “jumped in the car and went after it”.
They told The Northern Echo: “This was the first time I have seen something like this.
“You see this on the news, see on social media, but you never expect to see it yourself.
“I jumped in the car and went after it.”
It comes after a tornado struck in east London least month, leaving a number of homes and vehicles damaged.
Residents shared worrying footage of the extreme weather event on social media on the evening of June 25.
Police officers and the fire brigade were called by panicked Londoners as properties suffered structural damage.
