Say hello to T-Rex, the six-foot monitor lizard that gets treated just like a playful pup.

Matt Reid, 38, says his 40lb pet loves going for walks with kids Leighton, 11, and Kailah, seven.

Matt, a painter, said: “He is, I suppose, quite intimidating to some people but to me he’s a puppy dog.

“He’s so rare and it’s like owning a mini, modern-day dinosaur!”

Rex loves sunbathing outside their home in Andover, Hants, and enjoys weekly baths.

Matt’s wife Cordelia, 36, sees him as family but insists his dinner of rats, rabbits and guinea pigs stays in a freezer outside. Rex has a heated enclosure with special lighting in the garden during the day. He sleeps under the stairs at night.

But Matt said of his one-inch claws and razor-sharp teeth: “I’m always aware of this, especially when he’s around people he doesn’t know.”

Matt’s large lizard is not the first to take the internet by storm, in April a monitor lizard went viral after raiding a supermarket in Thailand.

The venomous lizard was seen on video climbing up a supermarket shelf in a shop in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

On April 6th the lizard entered the 7-Eleven store as staff and customers ran and hid behind the counter whilst the reptile searched for food.

A worried shopper called the police who arrived with reptile handlers and caught the lizard before it could cause harm to the workers or customers trapped with it in the store.

The reptile was returned to its natural habitat on the same day.

Witness Narumpa Tangsin said: "I only stopped at the shop to buy some food and then saw the huge monitor lizard inside.

"I wanted to buy a drink but the animal was too close to the drinks aisle.

"They're dangerous animals, especially when they're angry, so I stayed back and recorded it on my phone.

"I guess that shops have everything, even for lizards."
