The victim is reported by local outlets to be an American from Connecticut.
At the time of the attack, she is understood to have been snorkelling with a friend in the ocean close to Blue Haven Resort.
The peace of the picturesque spot, known for its tranquil turquoise waters and breathtaking scenery, was shattered by the incident which took place at 3:07pm yesterday (May 24).
The Police Control Room received the report from someone working at a resort located in the vicinity of the Leeward Marina, Providenciales.
It was on this call that the employee appeared to say that the victim had had her leg bitten off.

Members of the Officers of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force and the ambulance service were dispatched to the scene, Loop reports.
It has been a busy week for horror attacks in the water.
On Sunday Jordan Rivera, 23, had his right arm bitten clean off by an alligator as he popped for a wee behind a Florida bar he was in.
The arm was removed by the creature above the elbow, but despite the horror he said to NBC2: “Those gators, I didn’t truly understand them until I woke up in the hospital and, ‘Oh, gator got your arm.’
“I didn’t lose my life, I lost an arm, it’s not the end of the world, you know”.
“They got my elbow. So, I don’t have an elbow,” he added. “I can still move my arm around and whatnot.”
