A "tone deaf" politician has sparked outrage after he posted an insensitive gym selfie on Instagram while addressing the deadly tsunami in Tonga.

Defence Minister Peeni Henare has faced backlash from shocked locals after he shared an update following an underwater volcanic eruption that took place over the weekend.

It comes as Tongans have been left to wait anxiously for news about their loved ones following the critical incident which happened on Saturday, January 15.

But an eagle-eyed user spotted his thoughtless post and uploaded a screenshot onto Reddit with the caption: Defense Minister Peeni Henare social media post on the Tonga emergency situation.

He wrote on his Instagram: "Our thoughts are with the whanau in Tonga. We have the team working hard to respond. More on that soon. In the meantime."

The volcano triggered the tsunami which caused catastrophic waves to crash into Tonga, leaving communications broken following the disaster.

In response to the minister's online post, users have since branded him a "clown" for half-heartedly addressing the catastrophe while doing a workout.

One person blasted the politician and said: "Someone skipped brain day."

While another wrote: "Sorry about your volcano mate! We’ll sort ya out, but before we do, we gotta get these gains.

"Tone deaf much bro?"

The photo had been uploaded as an Instagram story on his account.

A third person commented: "Using a devastating natural disaster to boost engagement on your gym gains pics, what a clown."

Another person said: "I actually thought this was a meme… poor taste of me giving the benefit of the doubt."

The post received 811 upvotes, suggesting that overall people thought his Instagram story was of poor taste.
