Emergency crews have responded to “horrific scenes” of bloodied dogs running wild and attacking people in the street, killing one.

They claimed the life of an elderly man and put three more people in the hospital.

The horror situation met rescuers, who arrived at West Side in San Antonio, Texas, at around 2pm on Friday, February 24.

Two of the dogs, American Staffordshire bull terriers, were dragging a “completely bloody” 80-year-old man onto the pavement.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood toldKSATsaid that when his responders entered the area from their truck they too were attacked by the dogs as they tried to treat the victim.

They were forced to defend themselves with pickaxes and pike poles.

He said: “This is not something normal for us. We usually don’t show up and have to defend patients from animals or ourselves”.

He died of his injuries despite being given blood at the scene.

He and a 74-year-old woman are understood to have exited a car as they went to meet friends when they were set upon by the dogs.

The police described the two people as a couple and as they exited their vehicle two dogs from a nearby garden escaped.

The dogs caused: “visible bite injuries to both victims”.

Another victim was also bitten in the hand while a fire captain was bitten in the leg – all three surviving victims were taken to the nearby University Hospital.

Hood said: “Horrific scene, horrific for the people who experienced it and horrific for our firefighters that were part of this”.

San Antonio Animal Care Services have now taken the two dogs, which were unrestrained, as well as a third dog that lived at the same home.

It is understood that the dogs were euthanised on Friday night (February 24).

Speaking to KSAT, ACS Director Shannon Sims explained that the two dogs – one male and one female – had previously been involved in another attack two years ago.

Police said 31-year-old Christian Moreno, the owner of the dogs, has been arrested and is facing felony charges of attack by a dangerous dog causing death and injury to an elderly.
