The Queen was once caught with a "naked" Prince Philp during an intimate moment by a member of staff – who was said to be extremely embarrassed, according to a biography.
Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee celebrations are underway and the nation has been enjoying the four-day weekend.
The Queen and Prince Philip lived in Clarence House in the early years of their marriage and spent many happy hours together in private, according to Philip Eade’s 2011 biography, ‘Young Prince Philip: His Turbulent Early Life’.
Mr Eade wrote: “Philip had his own bedroom next-door to Elizabeth’s, an arrangement common to a great many upper-class couples at that time.”
There was reportedly a door built in between the wall between the two bedrooms and historian Robert Lacey told the author that the royal couple did “enjoy the visitation rituals which that system involves”.
Mr Eade was also told by Valet James Macdonald that he went into Philip's room one morning and saw the princess "in her husband's bed".
"While she was wearing her usual silk nightgown, Prince Philip appeared to be naked," Mr Eade explained.
It has been reported that Philip regularly refused to wear pyjamas.
Mr Eade continued: “The dressing tables in each of their rooms were placed close enough to the communicating door to enable them to talk to each other while dressing.”
The couple would reportedly joke through the door and spent many happy hours in one another's company.
Philip's valet John Dean described this period as the couple's "happiest time".
The Queen has further scaled back on her Platinum Jubilee celebrations after dropping out of the official salute at the Trooping of the Colour parade.

Held every year to officially mark the Queen's birthday, this year's events take place on Thursday, June 2.
Normally, Her Majesty would salute her personal troops – the Household Division – on Horse Guards Parade.
But this year, royal fans were shocked as it was announced that Prince Charles, Prince William and Princess Anne will be making the salute instead.
