A man killed in a horror crash in Newport during a night out was the son of an ex-Cardiff and QPR footballer.

Police had been hunting for the missing friends after they found the car at around midnight last night in St Mellons, Cardiff after a 48 hour search.

The car was carrying Sophie Russon, 20, Eve Smith, 21, Darcy Ross, 21, Rafel Jeanne, 24, and Shane Loughlin, 32, at the time of the crash.

Responding officers last night found three people dead at the scene including that of Rafel, whose father, Leon Jeanne, had played as a winger for QPR and Cardiff City.

The 42-year-old had retired from football in 2015 after stints at Bath City, Carmarthen Town and Port Talbot Town, where he finished his career after six appearances, the Mirror reports.

Police were searching for a group of friends who were last seen around 2am on Saturday morning, with another person, Eve Smith, 21, also found dead at the scene.

Sophie Russon, 20, and Shane Loughlin, 32, had been pictured together hours before the tragic event in what is believed to be the last image any of the five shared.

The families of those involved in the crash had previously shared CCTV grabs of the Volkswagen Tiguan they were driving on the night of the disappearance.

Three people previously reported missing were found dead, with two others taken to hospital, but Gwent Police have not yet confirmed their identities.

Eve's sister, Lauren Doyle, has since taken to Facebook and wrote: "I will not comment on anyone other than Eve Smith to confirm that she has been confirmed as deceased.

"Thank you for your support and shares I won’t be answering messages please allow us some time as a family to digest this terrible news."

Friends of Rafel have also paid tribute following his identification of one of the victims of the tragic incident, with one writing that he was a "lovely kid".

Another friend wrote: "Forever young god has gained another 3 Angels please keep all family & friends in your prayers through this hard time god bless RIP Eve, Darcy and Rafel."
