A man was taken to hospital with critical injuries after an assault in Māngere this morning.

A St John spokeswoman said the ambulance service was called at about 5.10am.

The incident happened in Māngere Town Square in the South Auckland neighbourhood.

Police were investigating the assault this morning.

“Initial reports indicated the victim and the offenders are known to each other,” a police spokeswoman said.
