Italian tourists are re-infecting embattled China with coronavirus as Beijing reported an increase in cases blamed on visitors to the city.
The country had observed a decrease in the number of people infected with Covid-19 thanks to stringent measures introduced by its government.
But there was a sudden uptick in the number of confirmed cases on Tuesday to 24 from 19 the day before, caused by people who arrived from Italy.
They will now be put into a 14-day quarantine joining others from Iran, South Korea and Japan.
Measures at Beijing’s airport are set to be stepped up in the coming days over fears infections from abroad could undo its attempts to slow the epidemic at home.
But new infections in central Hubei province declined for the sixth day running, prompting a visit from President Xi Jinping on his his first visit to Wuhan since the coronavirus outbreak forced a lockdown of the city of 11 million people.

He said during the trip: “We will certainly defeat this epidemic.”
Elsewhere a 53-year-old British woman died of coronavirus in Bali, Indonesia.
An Indonesian government spokesman said was already critically ill and suffering from diabetes, hypertension, hyperthyroidism and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The Foreign Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Indonesia and are in contact with local authorities.
“Our sympathies and thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.”
Meanwhile police in Italy are forcing people to keep apart in cafes as part of efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
The number of people testing positive for covid-19 has surpassed 10,000 in the country.
