Shocking video has emerged showing two children inches from death as a gunman repeatedly shoots his victim.

The 10-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother scrambled to avoid a dozen shots fired by the shooter at his target on a street in New York's Bronx district.

The victim of the attack had crashed into the children while trying to escape his would-be assassin then tried to cower under them.

He received gunshot wounds to both legs and his back in the shooting but the kids were miraculously unharmed, the New York Post reports.

Sources at the Bronx Lebanon Hospital said the man was in surgery after the incident on Friday but was expected to survive.

The parents of the children, who were on a walk to buy sweets, spoke to police but were said to be too scared to file a complaint.

The shocking footage shows the young boy’s legs shaking in fear at one point amid the shocking bloodshed, which happened outside the children's apartment building.

Incidences of gun violence have more than doubled this year compared to the same period in 2020 and a friend of the kids’ family said relatives hope to raise money so the traumatised children and their parents can move.

Nilda Hock, a 75-year-old woman who lives near the scene of the shooting, said: “It’s very sad. We heard the shots. I said: ‘Oh my God.’ A lot of bad things happen in this neighbourhood."

A 31-year-old local woman, who only gave her name as Kat, said: "The gun violence is too much. Everything is just too much. It’s like he was careless… heartless."

She said she doesn’t feel safe in the city anymore, adding: "I see all this nonsense everyday all day. You know what I’m saying. I've got a baby."

She said the solution to rising gun crime was more police patrolling the area.

"They should (be here) because too many people have guns," she added.

The Bronx has seen the largest increase in shootings this year compared to 2020, New York Police Department stats show.

Up to last Sunday, police recorded 211 shootings in 2021, compared to 97 for the same period last year.

Almost 250 people have been shot this year in the rising tide of gun crime.
