A short-sighted pensioner is facing a decade behind bars after he touched a nurse's breast "while trying to read the name badge" on an NHS uniform.

Widower Andrew Sington, 76, is facing jail for sexual assault after being visited in hospital by the nurse, whose breast he is said to have accidentally touched.

Sington, who was not wearing glasses at the time, was seen by his partner, patient and other hospital staff to have touched the nurse's left breast.

At the time, the 76-year-old said: "I am sorry I didn't mean to touch your boob, I was just checking your name", Liverpool Crown Court heard.

The nurse, who is in her 40s and cannot be named, later reported the incident to senior colleagues and was said to be in a state of "shock and disbelief" over the encounter with Sington.

The pensioner was convicted of sexual assault, which carries a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Retired business consultant Sington was described as "eccentric" by his lawyer, who went so far as to compare him to the animated character Mr. Magoo, a short-sighted elderly character.

The victim said that when introducing herself, Sington had patted her on the arm, a "tactile" move from the pensioner, she claimed.

The nurse, who "dismissed" the arm pat, said: "Some people are quite tactile and I didn't think anything of it. I just sat down and there was some general conversation.

"It was about 30 minutes into the visit when the patient was becoming quite restless and we decided to take her back to the ward. We were standing, preparing to leave and close to the door and the patient's mum was talking about when she would next visit."

Of the assault, the nurse made it clear that her name badge was on the right side of her fleece, but that "Mr Sington then put his arm across from the right and touched me on my left breast."

She added: "I just froze, I was shocked. It was the last thing I expected to happen."

CCTV footage of the incident proved conclusive, with chairman of the bench Frank Dainty saying the prosecution witnesses were "credible, mutually supportive and consistent" with images of the incident.

Singleton, who was "absolutely horrified" by the verdict, will be sentenced over the incident at Liverpool Crown Court on November 25, with the pensioner given 21 days to lodge an appeal.
