A Google Maps user has discovered an image of what appears to be a baseball field in the middle of mysterious Area 51.
The picture from the popular site was uploaded to Reddit, and sparked a frenzied debate about what it was doing there.
Area 51 has been the subject of alien conspiracy theories for decades and internet users were keen to know what a baseball field was doing at the secretive US government facility.
The original post asked whether the sports pitch was for aliens, which led to a string of witty responses.
One Reddit user stated that "workers gotta recreate too" with another adding: "Lol if you build it they will come," an apparent to the famous Kevin Costner movie Field of Dreams.
The Google screenshot shows a baseball diamond in the centre of what is supposedly Area 51.
But one user attempted to give some context to the strange scene at the facility in the US state of Nevada.
They said: "That's been there since the late 50s/early 60s. Once the cold war heated up, they expanded the base from the outpost that it started as and some of the first things they installed was this baseball field, some tennis courts, and, of course, a bar."
Another Reddit user, referred to reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes who had links to Area 51, said: "I thought it was kinda crazy Howard Hughes had his own hangar. Pretty Cool."
A third wrote: "Looks like a baseball field but is it really a baseball field?"
One user called the field "the most suspicious thing ever".
According to a post on Major League Baseball (MLB), the Las Vegas Sun reported on the mysterious diamond at Groom Dry Lake.
They claimed that the field once hosted recreational softball games for a nearby electrical company, however that was 1965 and the company has not been seen for a long time.
