Ghislaine Maxwell is currently being held at a New York prison ahead of her sex trafficking trial which is set to begin later this month. The heiress has recently spoken out about her experience in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center and claims she is often joined by a rat as the conditions are so bad.

Ms Maxwell has spent the last 16 months behind bars, after being arrested in July 2020.

She recently participated in an interview from her 10ftx12ft prison cell, where she described her experience, including how a rat would join her as she used the toilet.

She said: “I used to go to the loo with an open sewer drain and a friendly rat would regularly visit.

I told the guards, but nothing was done until the rat popped out and charged a guard who screamed in terror.

“Finally, the sewer drain was covered.”

In her interview with the Mail on Sunday, she claims her experience of solitary confinement has been “inhumane”.

The 59-year-old also claimed she has been assaulted and abused by prison guards.

Ms Maxwell has also claimed that the food she has been provided with has maggots inside.

During her time behind bars, she claims she has not eaten a “nutritious meal”, and instead is provided with “rotten food”.

She also claimed that she hasn’t slept without lights on during her time and that the “fluorescent lights that have damaged [her] eyes”.

She said: “I have been assaulted and abused for almost a year and a half.

“I have not had a nutritious meal in all that time….

“I am weak, I am frail. I have no stamina. I am tired. I don’t even have shoes which fit properly.

“They feed me rotten food.

“One apple had maggots in it. I have not been allowed to exercise.”

She also claims she has stopped showering because of “creepy guards” who “stand close and stare”.

Ms Maxwell also explained that she fears it will be “impossible” for her to get a fair trial because of the “overwhelmingly negative” media coverage of her case.

She has been accused of recruiting young girls for her ex-boyfriend, convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein to abuse for around a decade from 1994 to 2004.

If found guilty in her trial, Ghislaine could face up to 80 years in prison.

Ms Maxwell denies all of the allegations and has pleaded not guilty.

The jury selection begins on Monday and the six-week trial is due to start on November 29.

Express.co.uk has contacted the Federal Bureau of Prisons about Ms Maxwell’s claims.
