A 48-year-old mum took her daughter's identity to pretend to be a student to date younger men.

Laura Oglesby, from Missouri, United States, got away with pretending to be her 22-year-old daughter Lauren Hays for more than two years.

Oglesby started the scam in 2016 when she was 43 years old and living in Arkansas at the time.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri, she found her daughter’s ID in the mail and used it to obtain a Missouri driver’s licence.

Oglesby then moved to a small town called Mountain View in Missouri, where she took on her daughter's name and age.

She portrayed a student from Southwest Baptist University who worked in a library.

According to the New York Times, Chief Jamie Perkins of the Mountain View Police said Oglesby even had boyfriends that believed that she was 22-year-old.

She was even taken in by a couple who Oglesby told she was fleeing domestic violence.

Avery and Wendy Parker allowed her to live with them because they wanted to help her.

Speaking to KY3, Avery said: "'A woman in town had said that there was a girl who had had an abusive relationship and she was at the Christos House (a shelter) and wanted to know if we could help her out, get her on her feet, get her started, mentor her and get her a fresh new life. We said sure, absolutely."

Avery went on to describe her as a “giddy, silly girl” who acted more like 17 than 22.

Oglesby reportedly ruined her daughter’s credit by running up debts of over $25,000 (around £18,800) in debt in Hays’ name.

The fraudster was only caught during a traffic stop in 2018, where she initially denied she was Oglesby.

However, she allegedly came clean after police showed her proof that they knew who she really was.

She has been ordered to pay $17,521 (around £13,200) to the university as well as her daughter for identity theft.

Oglesby now faces up to five years in prison without parole for Social Security Fraud.

Her daughter, the real Hays, has yet to speak publicly regarding her mother’s actions.
