A woman once hailed as "Teacher of the Year" has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a 16-year-old student.

Tracy Vanderhulst, 38, was booked into the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino, California, US, after being accused of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

Police from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department say there may also be more victims of Vanderhulst's alleged crimes.

Detectives launched an investigation on Thursday (May 18) with the Yucaipa Calimesa Joint Unified School District after they were made aware of a sexual misconduct allegation.

Officers gathered evidence and soon identified Vanderhulst as the suspect in the case and arrested her, with her bail set at $30,000 (£24,137.70).

Police have not yet released any further information about Vanderhulst's alleged sexual relationship with the minor or relating to the case.

Before the probe into Vanderhulst's alleged conduct began she was heralded "the educator so many desire to be" and in 2017, was recognised as the "Teacher of the Year" at Yucaipa High School, where she has taught maths for the past 10 years.

The school's principal said of Vanderhulst at the time: "Tracy Vanderhulst is Yucaipa High School’s Teacher of the Year as she epitomises the educator so many desire to be.

"She is the kind and innovative teacher from whom we hope our children will grow; the educator who strives to engage all of her students from her intervention classes to her honors classes."

Praising Vanderhulst in a since-deleted tweet, the school also said she "offers up a rigorous mathematics curriculum and deep caring for her students," and a YouTube video posted by the school seven years ago also showed the teacher leading an honours class to mostly freshman students at the school.
