A man murdered a 21-year-old woman because her dog pooed outside his house.

Michael Close, from Denver, USA, got into an argument with Isabella Thallas her boyfriend Darian Simon after they apparently encouraged their dog Rocko to go number two in a rock garden outside Close's apartment.

Close is thought to have begun shouting out the window when he heard the couple telling the dog to "go potty", saying: "Are you going to train that f***ing dog or just yell at it!?"

He then went to grab an AK-47 which he had taken from his friend who is a sergeant in the Denver police, and fired 24 shots at the couple.

Ms Thallas was hit in the back and died at the scene, having celebrated her 21st birthday just two days before, while her boyfriend suffered gunshot wounds to the leg and buttocks but survived.

Close was later apprehended during a traffic stop later that day.

His defence team argued for a not guilty verdict, claiming he had suffered a severe mental breakdown due to an abusive childhood, consecutive job losses and a break-up but the jury disagreed.

Close was tearful in court as his fate was read out, as were members of Thallas’ family who attended the court hearing, with Thallas' mum saying she felt "numb".

“We’ve been waiting two and a half years for this day and what happened in there just went by … almost as fast as my daughter was slaughtered,” her mum said.

Isabella’s father, Joshua Thallas, told reporters outside the court: “there is no justice in this.”

Close is yet to be sentenced, but is likely to face a mandatory life sentence.
