The mum, who wants to remain anonymous, took her 14-year-old child and three of her mates to Sand Le Mere, a holiday resort in East Yorkshire. However, the 46-year-old parent branded the trip a “holiday from hell” and believes it is safer for Brits to holiday abroad despite the pandemic.

She told Hull Live: “We’d had a number of holidays cancelled throughout the last year and we wanted to have a bit of fun – but in a safe way of course. It was the holiday from hell. I honestly think it would have been safer for us to go abroad.

“The pool was dirty and they didn’t sanitise anything.

“What was happening when children go down the water slide? Would they clean it after every go? They didn’t clean those water slides.”

The four children all tested positive for coronavirus after their stay and now the mum has vowed to never return to Sand Le Mere, a Park Holidays resort, again.

She claimed minimal Covid-safe measures were in place.

“There was one rule where you had to book slots at the pool to restrict numbers but it was still really busy,” the tourist, from east Hull, added.

“I’d never go back, you couldn’t pay me to go back. I would not recommend it.

“The children loved playing in the swimming pool but I didn’t go in. They spent most of their time in the pool – around two hours a day.

“When we came back after the terrible trip we all had a lateral flow test, I tested negative but all of the kids tested positive. I honestly think they could have got it from the pool/changing room area.

“My daughter was coughing and I just knew. I wouldn’t go back – people need to be cautious. Obviously we trust them to have safe rules in place when we book these places.”

The mum

The mum rang the caravan park to inform staff of the teenagers’ positive results after their stay.

She continued: “I was told ‘I’ll pass this information on to the manager’. The lady didn’t even take my name or any of my information so they had no way of getting back in touch with me.

“The caravan I was in was private you see but we obviously spent a lot of time in the holiday village’s facilities.

“You’d hope they would do a full clean of the pool or something and let myself and customers know but they haven’t.”

Sand Le Mere’s website details how customers can rebook their holiday if they contract coronavirus, but lacks little detail about specific rules at the holiday park.

It states: “You must advise us before 12pm midday on the day before you are due to arrive if you are unable to travel due to Covid symptoms. We are unable to defer or amend any bookings after this date.

“If you or a member of your party have been told to self-isolate, or have any Covid-19 symptoms, please let us know as soon as possible and DO NOT come on your holiday.”

A spokesman for Sand Le Mere told Express.co.uk: “We are sorry to hear about the customer whose children recently tested positive for Covid following their return from holiday. Park Holidays UK takes very seriously its responsibility for safeguarding guests and employees, and is fully compliant with government and Department of Health guidelines on minimising Covid transmission risks.

“As well as the various precautionary measures in place on our parks and our providing of safety advice to customers, we also continue to display NHS QR codes around our properties which we encourage customers to scan. Although there is now no obligation for businesses to record customer details or provide QR codes, we acknowledge their value to helping to trace close recent contacts of anyone who has become infected.

“Under government regulations, there is no requirement for businesses to report incidents of Covid disease among members of the public attending their premises.”
