In a brutal interview on Sunday Mr Phillips unlaoded both barrels on Mr Eustice who was insistent that the Owen Paterson lobbying scandal and attempts by Boris Johnson and Conservative MP’s to change the standards they are expected to abide by has not tarnished the Government’s image or damaged Parliament’s reputation.

Mr Phillips slammed: “Surely you must accept the Government is in trouble over this issue!

“Not just of the specific issue but of character, of sleaze?”

But Mr Eustice hit back: “I know you might put it that way, opposition MPs and opposition leaders you may have on will no doubt say that.

“But I don’t agree!”

Mr Eustice then appeared to shift the conversation towards his visit to COP26 in an attempt to pull focus off the scandal with little success.

He went on to claim that the Owen Paterson case “is a sort of Westminster storm in a teacup” as he desperately tried to defend the Government’s reputation.

But he accepted “we made a mistake” in bringing the amendment vote on MP standards forward in what many observers regarded as a blatant attempt to protect Mr Paterson.

The Government have now u-turned on the vote which passed 250-232 to re-examine MP standards
