The brutal takedown came as the Sky host produced a damning graph which showed Britain’s productivity over the last 11-years has shown little sign of change despite claims made by successive governments.

Mr Phillips said: “The IFS estimates that over the past 10-years we have spent £39.5 billion in adult training and skills.”

The Sky host then shows the Chancellor a graph that hit home the apparent impact investment in the economy has had on productivity.

He added: “The increase in productivity is as near zero as dammit!

“Until you have worked out why that money isn’t making any difference, aren’t we just throwing good money after bad?”

But Mr Sunak hit back: “There is lots of different things that go into increasing our productivity.

“Our plan for growth  that we set out involves investing in infrastructure, innovation and skills.”

Mr Sunak went on to insist how investing in infrastructure will be key to pushing up Britain’s productivity.

He explained this will also drive growth in the UK’s cities.
