According to polls released following last week’s controversial vote, the electorate is not happy with the UK’s leadership. The Conservative party now has an incredibly slim lead over Labour, with 37 percent of the prospective vote to 36 percent. And Mr Johnson’s popularity has tumbled to a new all-time low of -20, down four points since the controversy, according to Opinium.

When are the upcoming UK by-elections?

Some analysts have quickly dismissed the recent results as inconsequential, given the UK is still three years away from the next General Election.

But it could cost the Tories sooner, with three by-elections on the cards.

One of these has opened up as a direct result of the latest scandal, potentially changing the political landscape in a Conservative bolthole.

Old Bexley and Sidcup

Old Bexley and Sidcup is the only upcoming by-election with an official date.

Candidates have already started canvassing in the area, ahead of polls opening on December 2.

Late Conservative MP James Brokenshire formerly represented the seat in the Commons.

Mr Brokenshire served his community for 11 years after moving from Hornchurch in 2010.

He died aged 53 on October 7 this year, after a long battle with lung cancer.

The by-election will run like any other, and the Conservative party has selected local councillor Louie French to pursue the seat.

Labour has chosen Bexley council member Daniel Francis, but there is little hope of a win due to a staggering Tory majority of nearly 20,000.

Southend West

Southend West is the former constituency of late Conservative MP Sir David Amess.

Sir David became the third MP to die in office this year on October 15.

He died following an attack – since ruled a terrorist incident – at a constituency surgery last month.

The Southend West by-election doesn’t have a date yet, and given the circumstances, will not progress as usual.

Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party and Reform UK have pledged not to contest the area out of respect for the fallen MP.

They will follow precedent set in 2016 when a Neo-Nazi killed late Labour MP Jo Cox.

Conservatives have not yet announced who they intend to take Sir David’s place.

North Shropshire

The latest by-election to open up is in North Shropshire, the former constituency of Owen Paterson.

The MP resigned in disgrace last week following Conservative efforts to undermine independent Parliamentary scrutiny offered by the Standards Committee.

The committee concluded money he received from companies Randox and Lynn’s – which “amounted to nearly three times his annual parliamentary salary” – was an “egregious” breach of ministerial conduct codes.

In response, Conservative MPs forced a vote to disregard the ruling and potential punishment before forming a new committee.

The opposition branded the decision “corruption” and refused to participate in the “sham” committee to review the case.

Mr Paterson declared he made a “painful decision” to resign, adding he wanted to serve the public “outside the cruel world of politics”.

There is no date for the forthcoming election and no candidates, although Labour and the Liberal Democrats have ruled out a cross-party “anti-sleaze” candidate.

Leicester East

Former Labour MP turned independent Claudia Webbe currently controls Leicester East.

She was recently expelled from the party after courts found her guilty of harassment and handed her a suspended sentence.

There is no word yet on a by-election, as she may appeal the ruling before her constituents have their say via a recall petition.
