Stepping in for Labour leader Keir Starmer after he tested positive for Covid, Ms Rayner claimed thousands of families are facing “disaster” due to tax rises and rising energy costs. The PM shot back, suggesting VAT cuts are possible thanks to Brexit – something Rayner campaigned against.

However, Mr Johnson’s reply did not sway Express.co.uk readers, who expressed outrage at the exchange.

Holly Chestnut said: “Just cancel the VAT Boris.

“Stop the childish, ‘yeah but you said’ point scoring, and do something useful for a change.

“Lord knows it’s long overdue – both the removal of VAT on energy bills, and Boris doing anything useful!”

Pricey_ said: “Boris stop moving the goal post and remove the VAT.

“This isn’t a Tory policy at all, this Tory cabinet is a joke, either cut VAT or step down Boris and let someone run this country right.”

During this week’s PMQs, Mr Johnson said to Ms Rayner “She campaigned to remain in the EU didn’t she?” before beginning a pantomime-style chorus of “oh yes she did!”

He added: “They now have the bare-faced cheek to come to the Commons and say they want to cut VAT for fuel.”

Ms Rayner responded by criticising the PM’s haircut as well as his character, saying: “It is not about brushing your hair, it is about brushing up on your act.”

Mr Johnson’s performance did not convince many Express readers.

Eire said: “Johnson before Brexit: ‘We need to leave EU to cut VAT on energy bills’

“After Brexit: ‘No, that’s not a good idea’.

“This never stops being funny, ever feel like you’ve been had chaps?”

Fredregar said: “Eton educated man with a degree made to look foolish by someone who left school at 16.”

Arcanhac added: “He’s got a nerve, he could do something to help but he’s not.”

However, some were less positive about Ms Rayner’s side of the benches.

In particular, readers highlighted her aggressive style.

At the end of PMQs, Rayner attempted to make a point of order by claiming the Prime Minister misled the House when he said he never said inflation would not rise.

However, her request to Sir Lindsay Hoyle to correct the record was slapped down by the Speaker, who said it was a point of clarification not of order.

Mikeyshmikey commented: “That Rayner’s got no plans.

“Just moans about everything but no solutions.”

Proudscot seemed to echo this sentiment, saying: “I heard nothing of any substance in her rants. Only accusations and insults.”
