If approved, the three-tier system will come into force from midnight tonight.

Last week the Health Department set out which tier it expects each area of the country to be in.

Anger from Tory benchers increased when it was revealed 99 percent of England would be in the top two tiers of the system.

But addressing the House of Commons today ahead of a vote on the measures later tonight, the Prime minister warned the virus had not been eradicated and strict measures were still needed to save lives.

He said: “While the virus has been contained, it has not been eradicated.”
