Today Volkswagen pulled the swirly camouflage off the ID5 GTX (and its non-GTX) sibling, giving us a perfectly clear view of what the ID5 GTX-02 concept car had barely disguised. Since the roofline was no mystery, we’re really just seeing what the ID5 siblings look like in production form, from the shoulders down. And the ID5 is a good deal sportier-looking than the more conventionally styled VW ID4—its more upright sibling that is already on sale here in America.

Basically an ID4 “Coupe”

The biggest visual differentiator between the two ID5s seen here is the black-painted roof on the GTX. The blacked-out roof lends the ID5 a cockpit sort of look, and it is a time-tested trick to reduce visual mass and increase the perception of sportiness. We must say it works here. But you might be surprised to discover that both versions of the ID5 have the subtle but very fun little wing arcing over the rear decklid. Whether contrasting or matching the body color, the roofline gives the ID5 a much more carlike look, at least above the beltline, and shaves just half an inch off the rear seat headroom.

And those looks also come with a low coefficient of drag: a claimed 0.26 Cd. That helps the ID5 achieve a maximum estimated range in the European WLTP test cycle of 323 miles on a charge (for the rear-wheel-drive versions, at least).

The GTX Is the Sporty Version

The ID5 will offer three motor configurations. The rear-wheel-drive ID5 Pro is powered by a single 172-hp e-motor, while the ID5 Pro Performance increases that single rear motor’s output to 201 hp. The ID5 GTX—which represents a performance trim level for VW EVs that won’t be coming stateside to the ID5’s ID4 sibling—has a dual-motor design, providing all-wheel-drive and a total system output of 295 horsepower, an estimated 0-62 mph time of 6.3 seconds, and a projected range of 298 miles. All are fed by a 77-kWh lithium-ion battery.

 

Many EV enthusiasts are aware that even zero-tailpipe-emissions EVs generate carbon during production, transportation, and recharging (depending on the grid’s power source), but those especially concerned about this should note that VW claims the ID5 will be delivered in a carbon-neutral state. The Zwickau factory in Germany uses low-emissions electricity and mitigates any unavoidable carbon emissions, the company claims. The interior is also free of materials made from animals.

There are no plans as of yet to bring the ID5 stateside, but we imagine it’d be possible were enough interest in the model to develop.
