It's three seconds faster than a standard NSX

Even with a very small chance of any cars coming here, the Acura NSX Type S remains a very exciting project. Not least for likely being the last Honda supercar with a combustion engine, but also for aiming to realise latent potential in what’s always been a very impressive R8 rival.

Now we have some idea of just how far the Type S will improve on the standard NSX, with a new lap record set at Long Beach. Which, typically, would be of limited validity – it’s hardly like California’s most famous street circuit is the Nurburgring. But given the previous record was set by a regular NSX just two years ago, it becomes a rather more relevant benchmark.

The Type S is significantly faster, too, setting a 1:32.784 with Ricky Taylor at the wheel; in 2019 the record was 1:35.663 with Peter Cunningham driving. For a car with only 27hp more than standard and weight saving limited to ceramic brakes, to gain almost three seconds around a minute-and-a-half lap is some going.

It would seem, therefore, that the chassis changes for the Type S – wider tracks, redone aero, upgraded tyres – have really paid dividends. You can see (and hear) the benefits of the new gearbox software in the lap, too, the downchanges – particularly at the end of the start/finish straight – coming in much more decisively than is normal for an NSX

Speaking about the lap, Taylor described Long Beach as “definitely challenging with so little margin for error.” As for the car, he described the Type S as “not only crazy fast” but also “remarkably easy to control at the limit. It’s a very special car and perfectly suited for a track like this.” It shouldn’t be long now until the 350 lucky Type S customers will get to find out for themselves.
