Lotus has officially broken ground on a new global headquarters and accompanying factory in Wuhan, China. To celebrate, the company has finally officially shared what exactly it plans to make there.
The current Lotus product line is a simple two-car solution. One, the Evija, is an all-electric hypercar, the first ever electric car in company history. The other, the Emira, is a classic lightweight sports car being billed as the last ever gas-powered car in company history. It is a perfect product line for a modern version of Colin Chapman’s Lotus, but the company’s ownership have much more broad ambitions for the brand. As a result, the line will expand to include four more all-electric cars by 2026.
The first, coming in 2022 and codenamed Type 132, will be the first long-rumored Lotus midsize SUV. In 2023, the Type 133 will join the fold as a four-door coupe of about the same size. In 2025, the Type 134 will come into being as a more compact SUV. In 2026, Lotus will finally unveil its ambitious all-electric sports car, known for now as the Type 135.
All four cars will be built at the new headquarters in Wuhan, while production of the Evija and Emira will continue at the current facilities in Hethel, England. The future transformation of Lotus into an all-electric company competing in a wide variety of performance segments is planned to be completed by 2028, the year Colin Chapman’s company turns 80.
