Few vehicles engender as much fun and nostalgia as the Volkswagen T2 bus, especially the pop-top camper variants. That makes it a natural fit for Lego, which previously had a model set from an older T1 version of Volkswagen’s famed microbus. That set—which came in red with a white roof—has been retired, and in its place is a model based on a newer version of the same vehicle: the second-generation T2, also known as the Bay-Window bus. If you have trouble telling the difference, this kit is blue.
The T2 model is also bigger and is comprised of more pieces (2,207 versus 1,332) than the old Lego bus. That means the recommended age range is also bumped up from 16+ to 18+, although if your little tike is a brick-placing prodigy then perhaps this $179.99 kit is the perfect gift. But, as with many of Lego’s Creator series sets, including the equally detailed Type 1 Beetle from a few years back, it’ll also appeal to a huge number of adults who love the challenge of assembling these kits (and the car models they represent).
The Lego Volkswagen T2 camper features a classic pop-top roof, working steering, a fully equipped kitchen, a pair of folding chairs, a surfboard, and even a rear bench that converts into a bed. The light blue and white two-tone is suitably friendly, and the interior is warm and inviting. You know, the retail price of this kit might not be the true cost, because the more we look at this friendly little brick van, the more we want a full-size camper to match. That could get expensive, quickly.
If you can limit yourself to just the model set, it’s on sale now wherever Lego Creator Expert kits are sold.
