Jaguar Land Rover said it was appealing to staff to take part in their “voluntary redundancy scheme”. The changes were needed to “safeguard” the long term success of the popular manufacturer.

The firm said changes were needed to “optimise performance” and achieve “growth”.

Thne Liverpool Echo has reported the redundancies were also down to the “unprecedented challenges” of the coronaviirus pandemic.

It is understood the voluntary scheme is being offered to colleagues on hourly contracts at the Halewood plant.

A spokesperson said: “ Jaguar Land Rover is taking action to optimise performance and achieve further operational efficiencies.

“[This is] to enable sustainable growth and safeguard the long-term success of our business.

“As a result we are implementing a very small voluntary redundancy scheme for some colleagues at Halewood.”

The news comes just 18 months after similar redundancies at the same plant.

The factory announced it would move from a three-shift pattern to a two-shift pattern last January, impacting 10 percent of its staff.

Last year, the firm announced 500 jobs would be lost due to the changes.

At the time, Jaguar Land Rover said Brexit had had no impact on the announcement.

They said negotiations for the move had been ongoing for months as a way to boost efficiency at the plant.

Back in January 2020, They said: “Through its ongoing transformation programme, Jaguar Land Rover is taking action to optimise performance, enable sustainable growth and safeguard the long-term success of our business.
