With thousands of new drivers expected on the road in the next few months, following the backlog of driving tests from Covid, it is vital drivers know these laws. Experts at Gumtree have compiled a list of some of the more obscure road rules which, if broken, could lead the driver to some serious consequences.

When it rains in the UK, it pours, and when that happens, puddles form.

If a driver splashes a pedestrian when driving through a puddle, they could be fined between £100 and a massive £5,000.

Motorists could also end up with a huge fine if they were to take money from friends or family when providing a lift.

This is illegal and could result in the driver receiving a fine of up to £2,500.

This is known as ‘taxi touting’ and it is an offence both licensed and unlicensed taxi drivers can fall foul of.

Drivers must also avoid flashing drivers to warn them of speed cameras as this could result in fines up to £1,000.

For those angry drivers, their road rage could get them into serious trouble as swearing at other motorists while driving can be seen as anti-social behaviour.

If caught doing this, fines can reach as high as £1,000 under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

Another important law to know about is how to display your number plates.

Personalised plates and the demand for customisation have been on the rise.

However, whether you’re choosing a new font, icons or different sizing, you must follow the rules and regulations.

According to Government rules, drivers cannot rearrange the letters or numbers of your registration or alter them so that they’re hard to read.
