Jason Price, 50, was issued a £42 parking fine after he stopped outside the Lincoln Hospital’s pathology department for over an hour. He arrived in a private ambulance but was issued the penalty notice just a few days later.

The initial penalty was issued at £70 but he received a discount for paying the penalty straight away.

Mr Price, who owns Price and Son Independent Family Funeral Directors, explained there were a few delays as they needed to wait while all the paperwork was completed.

He confirmed he had now paid the fine but was “disgusted” the penalty could even be issued.

He has attacked hospital parking schemes and called for urgent changes.

Mr Price said he considered penalising a private ambulance was “really low” and admitted people were “confused about changing rules”.

He said: “Our vehicle is a Mondeo ambulance and it even says ‘private ambulance’ on the back – so we were clearly not there as visitors.

“I think the whole parking issue at hospitals needs addressing as so many people are confused about changing rules.

“It’s not the fine but the principle of this, fining a private ambulance is really low. Especially when we are carrying out our duties.

“The hospital has since said that if we let them know in advance then we would have avoided the fine.

“But nobody has told us that so how are we supposed to know?”

A United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust said funeral directors should contact them directly to add details to their system.

The Trust said they supported local funeral directors and have offered to refund the parking charge.
