Select Car Leasing warns text messages with links could “give scammers access to bank accounts”. This could see criminals “immediately transfer the balance” to another account in a major concern.

The scam is so simple drivers could lose thousands of pounds within just a few minutes.

They said: “The DVLA recently issued a warning over a sharp rise in fake text messages that read as if they are sent by the agency.

“The texts either warn drivers that their payment details need to be updated or that their road tax is in need of renewal.

“These text messages give recipients a link to re-enter their bank details, potentially giving scammers access to their bank accounts where they can immediately transfer the balance to another account.”

The comments come just days after the DVLA issued their own warning to drivers through social media.

They urged drivers to not fall for scam messages and to use official websites for DVLA services.

They said: “Scammers pretend to be DVLA giving false information through texts and emails ‘phishing’ for your information.

“Don’t fall for it. Make sure you use GOV.UK to find DVLA services and information.”

NHS Counter Fraud has also warned its staff to keep an eye out for possible text scams.

They screenshotted a series of messages warning drivers were due an “outstanding vehicle tax refund from 2017”.

The message said this was down to an “overpayment” and included a link where drivers could supposedly “request a refund”.

Data from the DVLA released last year showed a massive increase in scam messages since the start of the pandemic.
