Coventry City Centre Police tweeted an image of a filthy Volkswagen Golf which they had pulled over. The Volkswagen was covered in dirt, with the number plate being almost completely ineligible, except for a few glimpses of yellow underneath the grime.
They captioned the post: “Please ensure your number plates are clean in Coventry.
“If not, you face a £100 fine if stopped on the public roads … and a FREE wipe to clean it.”
In response, one driver joked that the wipe cost the driver £100.
Coventry Police responded saying: “To be fair, they’re a lot cheaper for a pack.
“[They] work out less than 7p each and a few seconds saves drivers a hefty fine for having an obscured number plate.”
According to the DVLA, drivers are legally required to always display their number plate clearly.
If they don’t, they could face a £100 fine if they are stopped on public roads.
In the colder months, cars are more likely to get dirty because of the road surface.

This is why experts are warning drivers to ensure their licence plate is always legible.
Major risks also occur if the number plate does not clearly show the registration number correctly.
The DVLA warns that fines of up to £1,000 to be given out, as well as the prospect that the vehicle may fail its MOT test if the car is being driven with incorrectly displayed number plates.
This comes after a number of licence plate changes were made at the end of 2021.
