Transport for London (TfL) has increased the penalty for motoring contraventions from £130 to £160 on certain roads. Penalties will be issued for breaking rules on London’s red routes, some of the capital’s busiest roads.

The routes make up just five percent of London’s roads but carry 30 percent of the capital’s traffic.

This can include simple mistakes such as blocking yellow box junctions or parking illegally in loading bays.

Making a turn where movement is banned or parking in a bus lane could also see drivers fined.

Transport for London says the charge has risen in line with inflation and is the first increase since 2011.

Charges previously increased from £120 to £130 but have stayed static since.

The increase will also bring the charges in line with the penalties for non-payment of the Congestion Charge and ULEZ fees.

TfL confirms any revenue raised from the new scheme will be re-invested back into London’s transport network.

They said the new rules would help deter drivers from breaking the rules.

It will also support TfL’s Vision Zero aim to reduce road dangers and increase active travel.

Siwan Hayward, TfL’s Director of Compliance said breaking the rules could create “safety risk”.

She warns increasing the charge would therefore provide “a more effective deterrent to road users”.

She said: “We are committed to keeping London moving safely and efficiently, and compliance on the Transport for London Road Network is essential in achieving those aims.
