New data from traffic experts Waze has revealed “huge eagerness” to get back on the roads. Experts at the app said there have been huge increases in “caravan and motorhomes” making their way on UK based trips.

They warn the lifting of restrictions could lead to “carmageddon” on the roads as drivers desperately head away.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Ruairdh Roberts, Waze UK Country Manager has warned UK motorways will become “gridlocked”.

He has urged drivers to avoid travelling in peak hours and consider an alternative route to avoid being caught out in delays.

He said: “Our data shows huge eagerness to get back on British roads this summer.

“[There is] a huge increase in single-occupancy vehicles on the road along with caravan and motorhome drivers making their way to staycations.

“Without proper planning, the UK motorway network will become gridlocked.

“[This] is not only a bad start to a staycation but a substantial trigger for the 43 percent of respondents who become frustrated with just 30 minutes of traffic.

“Avoiding travel during peak hours, planning your journey ahead of time and considering a route which may be longer in miles but fewer in cars are just some of the ways in which motorists can avoid congestion this summer.”

Data from Waze shows two-thirds of British drivers have booked a staycation instead of a foreign trip.

This is a 52 percent increase in the number of staycations booked in typical years.

Analysis from Waze shows popular tourist sites such as the Lake District, Cornwall and Devon are set to be the worst affected.

A total of 21 percent of drivers said they had booked in at the Lake District or Cornwall with 19 percent visiting Devon.
